St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute (EI) was founded in 1968 by St. Mary’s Seminary & University, in cooperation with ecumenical leaders. The Ecumenical Institute encourages people of all denominations to explore theological studies in a serious, open-minded, and supportive environment. St. Mary’s is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools and by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Students are mostly working adults who are part-time learners following the ancient motto of “faith seeking understanding.” They pursue individual courses, one of several certificates, master’s degrees, a Certificate of Advanced Studies, or a Doctor of Ministry degree. Classes are held mostly on weekday evenings and Saturdays, and all of our programs are available wherever you are – on campus in Baltimore, and online. There are three terms per year: fall, winter, and summer. Tuition is very reasonable—the lowest in the region for accredited, graduate, theological education.
Master’s Programs
St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute offers accredited graduate theological programs for two master’s degrees, several graduate certificates, and introductory explorations. St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute also offers two pathways to a Master of Divinity degree (and the equivalent).
Certificate of Advanced Studies
The post-master’s Certificate of Advanced Studies in Theology (CAS) is designed for individuals who possess a master’s degree in theology (e.g., MAT.), ministry (e.g., MACM), divinity (e.g., MDiv), or a related field and who desire to continue their theological education with a general or focused program of study.
Doctor of Ministry Program
St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute’s Doctor of Ministry Program develops skill in appropriate ministerial research, attends to your personal and spiritual growth, and culminates in a summative doctoral-level ministry project.
